Smartphones are becoming far more common and experts predict that within the next few years they will become the standard form of mobile communication device, pushing out entry level phones in the mainstream. In the US 43 per cent of mobile phones are classed in the smartphone bracket and this percentage is rapidly increasing. What makes mobiles smart is no longer the hardware, but the software platform that powers them. The Apple iPhone has shown that a user friendly interface coupled with the trend-setting App Store download service are now more important than extras like digital cameras or sliding mechanisms. Here are the top 10 apps which will make an impact in 2010.
Timelines
This iPhone app is one of the best time management programs out there. It lets you organise your day in an inventive and engaging way, getting rid of tables and lists and replacing them with a visual graph that lets you portion out your precious hours and minutes as you see fit.
WaveSecure
Android users will love this security app that keeps your smartphone free from malware and safe from prying eyes. It also backs up your messages and folders and can pinpoint your phone if it is lost or stolen.
Opera Mini 5
Opera`s latest mobile web browser not only offers advanced features for multiple smartphone platforms, but its compression technology means that surfing the web on your mobile costs less.
BBLight
This app is to help BlackBerry users who want to watch extended videos on their phone without having the backlight automatically cut out before they are finished.
Cogs
This iPhone game requires the user to think two and three dimensionally for puzzling fun and its wonderfully quirky art style has clearly been created with love.
TaskKiller
If your Android smartphone is getting bogged down because too many apps are open at the same time, this app will let you close any offending apps quickly to free up some processing power.
iCamcorder
If you have an iPhone 3G rather than the updated 3Gs, then the iCamcorder will allow you to record video, even if Apple does not officially support it.
GTA: Chinatown Wars
The gaming phenomenon that started life on the Nintendo DS has made it to the iPhone and it allows for some street-level carnage and an engaging story.
XPlayer
If you are not a fan of the standard BlackBerry media player, then this is the perfect remedy, offering support for a variety of popular file types for both audio and video playback.
DailyBurn
There are many fitness apps for the iPhone, but daily burn is the best when it comes to sticking to a regime, or making yourself feel guilty about your transgressions. It lets you keep track of your weight, your calorie intake and the amount of energy that you have burned off.
Augmented reality is the next target that mobile manufacturers and app designers are aiming for. Some apps already bring in elements of real-world interactivity, showing you product information and promotion and allowing you to compare mobile broadband plans just by pointing your phone`s camera at a poster or relevant shop.
